About Us
Friends of Lower Haw River State Natural Area (FLOHA) was initially formed in July 2016 as a local chapter of Friends of State Parks, Inc., a statewide 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In March 2024, we decided to incorporate as an independent 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit corporation with the new name Friends of Lower Haw River, Inc. Read our Articles of Incorporation.

What We Do
We provide stewardship, education, and advocacy for the Lower Haw River State Natural Area and the Chatham County segment of the Haw River State Trail, both part of the NC State Parks system.
Stewardship: We enhance infrastructure and restore habitat.
Education: We provide educational programs to connect people with nature and to promote public awareness of the Lower Haw ecosystem.

Our major goals include:
Active management of LOHA by State Parks and/or Chatham County staff.
Development of sustainable land and paddle trails.
Expansion of LOHA and the Haw River Trail through land acquisition and/or conservation easements.
